Letters from Glidewell Executives
July 13, 2020
Message from The Executive Committee
Dear Glidewell Employees,
In attempt to slow down spread of COVID-19 in California, in today’s press conference Governor Newsom released an order to close specific operations statewide. Thankfully, this latest order does not affect Glidewell’s operations as our business is considered an essential activity related to healthcare operations. We will continue to conduct business as usual – providing our services to many dentists and patients in need of dental care.
However, as we continue to operate, we ask that you comply with our precautionary measures put in place in accordance with CDC guidelines to protect your health and those around you. With these implemented safeguards, our goal is to significantly reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 in our workplace.
- Stay at home if you are feeling unwell
- Have your temperature checked upon arrival to work (if your temperature reads 100F or above, you will be asked to go home)
- Mandatory use of face coverings at all times
- Maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet apart at all times
- Restricted use of shared items and spaces
We will continue to proactively manage the situation so that Glidewell remains a safe and comfortable working environment.
Thank you all for your support of these efforts and of each other.

Message from Jim Glidewell
Dear Glidewell Family,
As some of you have likely heard, it’s true. I’m officially a COVID-19 survivor.
I recently talked about my experience in our newest edition of Chairside magazine. But I also wanted to share it directly with you.
When I walked into the hospital on March 23, I weighed 230 pounds. Twelve days later, leaving in a wheelchair, I weighed 203 pounds. I couldn’t walk, and could scarcely talk.
But I’d survived, where so many others haven’t.
The worst of it was the intubation. My doctors debated the risks, but followed conventional wisdom. The virus and procedure damaged my lungs—maybe permanently—but it could have been worse.
I was fortunate to be included in a clinical trial for Remdesivir, a drug that I believe helped me recover. After waiting several days for the drug to arrive, we saw improvement after two days of IV delivery.
It’s been a slow, painful, sometimes depressing recovery. But I’m getting stronger every day, and I’m grateful to see how hard everyone has been working to keep our company on pace to recover, as well.
COVID, of course, is still out there. Thankfully, the vast majority of positive cases continue to report mild symptoms or none at all. For all the dire headlines, it’s not a death sentence.
But I’m here to assure you that you want no part of this illness. Even if you prove to be one of the many who weather it well, your family, friends, and coworkers may not be so fortunate.
The protective measures we’re all taking may seem inconvenient. But they’re not just for show. They’re absolutely designed to ensure that you and your loved ones are spared an experience like mine.
The best defense you have? Follow the recommended guidelines: maintain social distancing, wear your mask, check your temperature, wash your hands, avoid crowds, stay home if you feel sick, and let us know if you or someone you know may have come in contact with the illness.
Our work, our lives, are important, and we have to go about them as best we can. We can’t be ruled by fear—not with so many others relying on us. But we can be responsible, for ourselves and our peers.
Me? I caught it from a golfing friend. If ever I could take a mulligan, this would be it!
Your behaviors, at work and outside the office, can make all the difference. And I ask that you conduct yourselves accordingly. Because I don’t want any of you to have to endure what I did. Not when you still have a chance to avoid it.
Thank you for all you’ve done. Thank you for all you do. We’re living through a time in which our diligence, our willingness to sacrifice, are being tested. But it’s our ability to persevere, to keep moving forward, that will position us for even greater success in the future.
Yours through adversity,
Jim Glidewell, CDT

Message from Greg Minzenmayer
Dear Glidewell Family,
We are all living through one of the most difficult periods of our lifetimes. Our country is in pain; our Glidewell family is, too. The pain we feel as a nation from the destruction of our health and economy by the COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial and psychological hardship for so many. Then came the senseless killing of George Floyd—after the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others in our African American community. These events have justifiably spawned passionate emotions and sparked nationwide protests and cries for justice.
Glidewell is a large community. Many of us were born in America, but many employees immigrated here from nations around the globe. At Glidewell, we cherish that. We celebrate our diversity, inclusion, and equality. We are proud to have a workforce that includes different races, ethnicities, backgrounds, and perspectives. These are the qualities that make up the tapestry of our unique corporate culture. These are the qualities that have given us strength during times of adversity. And these are the qualities that will always see us through in the future. It is in this spirit that we stand with our African American employees to reject racism and intolerance inside and outside of our company.
During this time, when many members of our Glidewell community are feeling anxious and traumatized by recent events, it is okay not to feel okay. We must listen to one another and not shy away from uncomfortable conversations. As management, we embrace our responsibility to make sure everyone in our company feels safe and supported every day. We have always believed inclusion and open communication are the keys to ensuring every voice has the opportunity to be heard. We are here for you.
The sun is rising on a new day. Dentists are reopening their practices. Our business is coming back, and with it, our employees are returning to work. Our Glidewell family will soon be whole again, and over time, we will gather again for our big barbecues, summer picnic, and other large-scale events. We will once again celebrate our diversity and our unity by honoring cultural traditions, holiday celebrations, and other meaningful occasions.
We do these things not because others expect it of us, but because we expect it of ourselves. It is representative of who we choose to be, as responsible citizens and as members of this home away from home that we call Glidewell. As frustrated and isolated as some of you may feel, please know that you are not alone. We care for your wellness as we do our own, for it’s our collective strength that enables us to pave a brighter future for those we serve.
With respect and appreciation,
Greg Minzenmayer

Message from Jim Glidewell
Dear Glidewell Family,
It would be easy to dwell on the frustration and uncertainty we’re all feeling. To count our losses and bemoan the unfairness of it all. But I prefer to focus on the good I’m seeing:
- Our dedicated Production staff continue to handle emergency casework, backed by the many support departments needed to maintain critical operations.
- R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Regulatory Affairs are developing sanitizing sprays, facemask components, nasal swabs, and other antiviral solutions.
- Clinical Affairs and Marketing are engaging hundreds of dentists each day with online learning opportunities and routine outreach, nurturing future business.
- Sales and Customer Experience are managing and building relationships that will serve us well beyond today.
- Human Resources, Legal, Accounting, and other key departments are working tirelessly to keep everyone informed of constantly shifting developments.
- Executives are actively planning for a new future, in an effort to reward the faith we all have that brighter days lie ahead.
With these and so many other activities to recognize, it’s hard for me to be anything but grateful. Humbled by your efforts and energies. Realizing that even when the world feels quiet, ours is a bustling enterprise, just itching to return to full speed.
We have a ways to go yet. By current reports, we’re looking at mid-May to mid-June before various states begin to emerge carefully from lockdown. But we’re not just using the time between now and then to tread water. We’re constantly exploring new opportunities, researching and evaluating changes to the marketplace, preparing ourselves to be the first and fastest out of the gate as soon as it becomes feasible to do so.
We’ve come this far, and will weather whatever comes next. Downturns are never fun. But anyone who remembers the downturn of 2008 may also recall that the decade since has been the most successful in the company’s history. Though we may suffer, we do not suffer quietly. We will learn from this. We will adapt. And in the end, we will do what we do best: restore.
Yours through adversity,
Jim Glidewell, CDT

Message from Greg Minzenmayer
Dear Glidewell Family,
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well, and staying safe and healthy. If you have been following the news, you know that by complying with the social distancing and stay-at-home orders, we are slowing the infection rate of the coronavirus. Together, we are ensuring our communities do not suffer the same fate we are currently seeing in places like New York. Together, we are flattening the curve.
As we witness the courage and dedication of first responders and other healthcare workers across the country, I want to acknowledge Glidewell’s own frontline personnel. Many of our dental technicians and essential support staff come in everyday or work remotely to ensure our dentist customers can continue to treat emergency patients. We thank you all very much for your selflessness and devotion during these trying times.
This has been a tough few weeks for our company and this nation. But I want you to know that our plan to see the company through this crisis is working. Thanks to the sacrifices we are all making, we find ourselves better positioned to weather an extended storm. While communications are challenging during this constantly changing situation, I want you to know that we recognize the burden and the stress this shutdown is having on you and your families. Once the economy begins to open up, we will do everything we can to regrow our business and get fully back to work.
One of the greatest strengths we have as a company is our ability to adapt in the face of change. Glidewell persevered through 9/11 and the recession of 2009 and countless other challenges over the 50 years of its existence. I’m confident we will overcome this as well, because I know the strength and resilience of our people. Even though many of you are at home today, you remain the heartbeat of this company. We have not forgotten that, and we will not forget.
Because of this, there remains a bright light at the end of this tunnel. We can’t predict with certainty when dental practices may reopen. And so we must continue our present course for a while longer. But with your continued patience, understanding, and support, we will endure and return even stronger.I look forward to those days, and thank you for your remarkable dedication.
With respect and appreciation,
Greg Minzenmayer

Message from Jim Glidewell
Dear Glidewell Family,
Some of you are probably in shock right now. Anxious, uncertain, maybe even scared. I wouldn’t blame you. The sudden rise of the COVID-19 coronavirus and its unexpected impact has health officials and governments around the globe scrambling for answers. No one can quite seem to agree on what the appropriate course should be, or how long those measures should last. It’s made an unfortunate situation even more confusing and frustrating for everyone involved.
To help halt the spread of this virus, our dentist customers have been asked to close their practices to all but emergency cases. Most of you have heard this, or seen it as our incoming cases slow to a trickle. Our business, of course, is all about servicing those cases. Without them, we find ourselves coming like much of the rest of the world to an unexpected standstill.
Unbelievable, almost unimaginable, as we were watching a record number of cases stream in just a few weeks ago. But it’s our present reality, nonetheless. And reality doesn’t care if we believe in it or not. It just is. And those who can accept it, and confront it with a steady mind and steady hands, are those who typically fare better in dealing with it.
And I know no team, no army, better equipped to confront and overcome this challenge than you. I’ve seen your resiliency over the years. Your sacrifice. Your ability to swiftly adapt to sweeping changes. All are required now. In 50 years, we’ve never seen anything like this. We began this year celebrating our half-century anniversary and the pinnacle of our success. And here, suddenly, we’re faced with our greatest challenge.
But challenges are what test us, make us stronger, help us to grow. No one ever developed speed or stamina or strength by taking it easy. It’s not what we’ve done before, and it’s not what we’ll do now. Though we didn’t choose it, we’re on a hard road now. A necessary road if we’re to emerge stronger and better on the other side.
No one knows the future. If this episode proves short-lived, as everyone hopes, it’ll become just a nasty speed bump in our rearview mirror. But while hoping for the best, successful people plan for the worst, and take action to protect themselves against it. That’s what we’re doing now. Positioning ourselves for long-term success at the expense of some short-term discomfort.
Either way, I like our chances. Because I know what we’re made of. Your reactions thus far to all of this have been nothing short of exemplary. Calm, professional, willing to share and to sacrifice. That’s how communities stay strong. I’ve always felt that ours is a community like no other, and you’re all proving that to me—and to each other—now.
It’s heartwarming. It’s inspiring. Because nothing matters more to me than seeing all of you pull through this dark moment and into the light at the end of the tunnel. And it won’t be me who makes that happen. It will be you.
That’s why I know it will happen, and that the best is yet to come.
Yours through adversity,
Jim Glidewell, CDT

Message from Greg Minzenmayer
Dear Glidewell Family,
In recent days, every one of us has been forced to grapple with the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dentists nationwide have been asked to close their practices in order to slow the spread of the virus and save desperately needed personal protection equipment for the medical staff on the front lines battling the virus. As a result, with declining incoming cases, Glidewell must take decisive action now in order to protect the long-term viability of our company and the careers of our employees. Hence the difficult decision to suspend all activities that are not directly related to the production, delivery, and key support of our diminished case load.
We fully realize the impact these measures have on everyone’s lives in the short term, and haven’t made these decisions lightly. You, our employees, make up the heart and soul of Glidewell. We haven’t forgotten this. We believe in the truth of it today just as we did before all of this happened. We’re all living through an unprecedented event. Just a few weeks ago, it was unfathomable that we would be in this situation, when your combined efforts had this company on track for another record year of growth.
However, we have to address the reality of the current affairs that we find ourselves in. We are hopeful this situation will only last a few weeks, and the actions we’re taking today are out of an abundance of caution in case it draws out over a longer period. We are all in this together. I’ve asked all of our executives to take drastic pay cuts during this period, and to work with me full time to help manage our company through this crisis. I and the other ‘C’ level executives are prepared to work through this event with no pay if it comes to that. I can assure you that we are all steadfastly committed to doing whatever it takes to not only bring us out of this crisis successfully, but to also have Glidewell well prepared for whatever the future holds.
We believe that the future holds great promise. As this storm subsides, Glidewell should be the first ray of sunshine that breaks through the dark clouds now looming over our industry. Because of your combined efforts over the past several years on the production floor, in our call centers, in R&D, engineering, software development, IT, purchasing, manufacturing, marketing, accounting and every other department throughout the company, Glidewell is in prime position to resume quickly and help lead dentistry out of its present darkness.
The greatest trials reap the greatest rewards. And make no mistake, this is arguably the single greatest test of this company’s fortitude in its half-century of existence. The world is suffering, and Glidewell with it. But the world will endure. We will endure. And on the other side of this challenge, we will find ourselves stronger for it.
With respect and appreciation,
Greg Minzenmayer

Glidewell Gives Back
If you’re interested in participating in functions that give back to our community, here’s a rolling list of resources and events.
Donate Blood
Blood supplies are low and hospitals are in serious need of blood donations. The American Red Cross is assuring the public it is safe to donate blood at their facilities. The staff is highly trained and appropriate safety measures are in place to protect the donors.
Feed the Hungry
Most of the hungry are the working poor who are trying their best to provide food for their families, or seniors on fixed incomes who simply cannot make ends meet. With sky-high rents, rising medical costs, and high unemployment, too many of our neighbors are forced to make hard choices between food and paying the rent or buying the medicine they need.

Dear Glidewell Family,
As COVID-19 presents new and unique challenges, it’s important to find new ways of working and interacting while also taking care of your mental health and well-being. With many of our daily routines disrupted, it’s completely natural for this disruption and uncertainty to lead to anxiety and stress.
At Glidewell, we offer value-added programs and services at no charge through MetLife’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). You can utilize this confidential service to help with any home, personal or family issues, including any issues related to COVID-19.
Along with unlimited phone sessions, MetLife also provides a plethora of resources – here are a few pulled from their COVID-19 toolkit to help with maintaining your mental health during this time.

Dear Glidewell Family,
With temperatures soaring, summer has come into full swing. The idea of wearing a hot and sweaty mask isn’t the most appealing; however, with the continued spread of COVID-19, it’s important to keep wearing our masks and maintain social distancing to prevent transmission. Here are a few tips to keep cool through the summer heat.
- If the forecast calls for high temperatures, avoid situations that require a mask. If that’s not possible, run your errands first thing in the morning or at night when it’s cooler.
- Take breaks! If you’re outside, distance yourself from others to remove your mask for a few minutes.
- Stay hydrated. If you start feeling unwell, get out of the heat, safely remove your mask and get medical care immediately.
- Choose the right material and fit for you. Cotton masks are typically the most breathable. Masks should fit securely, but comfortably against your face and cover your nose and mouth.
- If you’re sweating through your mask, bring an extra mask to swap it out. Here’s a lower-risk method for changing your mask.
- Step 1: Wash hands with soap and water (if not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) before removing your mask.
- Step 2: Remove the mask by using the ear loops that go over your ears. Do not touch the front of the mask.
- Step 3: Store the used mask in a sealable bag or container. This keeps it from contaminating your hands and items nearby.
- Step 4: Wash hands with soap and water (if not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) before touching your clean mask.
- Step 5: Put your clean mask on by putting the loops around your ears. Make sure your mask covers your nose and mouth.
- Step 6: Wash your mask when you get home.
We hope these recommendations help!
Dear Glidewell Family,
As you know, we’ve implemented a number of protective practices since the start of the coronavirus to keep our employees as healthy and safe as possible. We’ve come to embrace a new sense of normalcy where we’re wearing our face coverings at all times, having our temperature scanned as we arrive to work, and maintaining social distanced interactions throughout the day.
This week, we checked-in with our extended family at our satellite locations to see how they’re adjusting. See for yourself below for another Glidewell Around the World feature! Though our surroundings may look and feel a little different, knowing that we’re all in this together gives us a sense of calm and renewed optimism. Shout out to RDC, Crown World Kentucky, LVDDS, Pacific Edge and Glidewell Tijuana for sharing a piece of their experience with us.
Dear Glidewell Family,
“For over 50 years, Glidewell has redefined what’s possible and in 2020, the world’s most innovative dental lab will reveal a future that is faster, more precise and consistent than ever before.” All-access dentistry is coming with Glidewell Intelligent Manufacturing launching this year.

Dear Glidewell Family,
We hope everyone had an enjoyable long weekend and begins this week feeling recharged. As FYI, we’ll continue to provide weekly updates via text to relay important business updates and employee news; however, will be transitioning to bi-weekly updates on Smile Connection. With pieces of our operations resuming, we’ve reallocated our resources to fulfill a growing list of prioritized business needs.
Dear Glidewell Family,
June 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of annual LGBTQ+ Pride traditions. Pride Month is timed to align with the Stonewall Inn riots of June 1969, a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Celebrating individuality and personal identity is built into Glidewell’s DNA, and we’re so proud to have such a diverse workforce that represents and embraces uniqueness. We’re honored to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and invite you to join us in commemorating Pride Month to recognize the impact LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history – locally, nationally, and internationally.
We can’t wait to see Glidewell radiate with pride!
Dear Glidewell Family,
Dear Glidewell Family,
As employees, we often focus on the internal workings of our business. We tend to forget how our accomplishments achieved day-in and day-out impacts our customers and the world of dentistry. This week, we wanted to share how we’ve not only upheld, but amplified Glidewell’s mission to improve patient access to quality dentistry and help practices thrive.
Dear Glidewell Family,
With the addition of our internal careers site to Smile Connection this week, we’re featuring a recent business venture and the amazing opportunities it presents in today’s message. HyperScan CT is one of Glidewell’s newest endeavors, where we’ve expanded our business to providing impression scan & design services to various companies. Join the HyperScan CT Team and be a part of this exciting growth as we establish our place in this emerging market. HyperScan CT is currently hiring for 3 CAD/CAM Scanner & Designers, 2 CT Scan Technicians, and 1 Driver/Mail Room Associate. Look below for an inside peek at the team’s space and technology-forward processes!
Dear Glidewell Family,
We’ve successfully made it through another month, and are feeling extra uplifted as we head into June basking in the warm and radiant sun. Though we can’t have our traditional summer BBQ or pool party this year, having fun is not canceled! We can still enjoy our summer days, but it’s important to do so responsibly for the good of everyone.
If you’re planning to go to the pool, beach, or lake this summer, read this article for a few tips on how to have fun without fear. Respond to our question of the week with how you spent your long weekend or have been safely passing the time. With each of our creative minds, we have enough good times to share between all of us.

Question of the Week
Last week, we asked you to share some new hobbies you’ve taken on during this time. Here’s what Shawn Bentz has been up to:
“I’ve always enjoyed cooking and eating. Growing up I’d watch my aunt and grandma make these amazing Chinese meals and would watch shows like Julia Childs, Yan Can Cook and the Frugal Gourmet. My passion for food stepped up a notch in college when I discovered the Food Network. During normal times it can be hard to cook as some of the dishes I love can take hours to prep and make so I would limit myself to cooking 1-3 times a week besides the quick things you can just throw together. The stay at home order has given me a chance to cook every day. This includes looking up recipes of my favorite dishes and replicating them such as Nobu’s miso glazed cod. Recently I had a chance to practice and perfect one of my favorite Chinese dishes, roasted pork belly! My best advice for cooking is be patient. You can’t expect to nail a dish the first time around but after practice and adjustments you’ll set yourself up to make your dream meal”
– Shawn Bentz
Dear Glidewell Family,
Happy May, everyone! We’re officially celebrating every new month because it means that we’re all one month closer to being on the other side of this – and this is definitely something worth celebrating. Last week, we had the opportunity to thank all of our essential workers, especially those who have been courageously working on-site. We hope you enjoyed the card, swag, and festive country music parade! We’ve captured a few photos to commemorate your hard work below.

Dear Glidewell Family,
Our culture is characterized by our values and made real every day by how we work and lead. It’s the foundation for all we’ve accomplished – the success we’ve had, our strength and perseverance in downturn, and the triumph ahead of us. While we can’t say for certain what the next weeks or months hold, we can say that all of you continue to exemplify our core values in all that you do. Our collective strength and conviction in embracing our values will be our driving force towards restoration. Here’s just a reminder of what makes us uniquely Glidewell:
- Value creation: We deliver accurate, beautiful, and long-lasting dental restorations to our customers at an affordable price so they can efficiently help more patients.
- Vertical integration: We control our costs, our quality, and our speed of growth by keeping as many functions as possible in-house.
- Innovation/creativity: We foster an environment that encourages our people to discover and collaborate.
- Industry leadership: We continually invest in new technology, techniques and materials so we can continue to set the bar for quality, service and affordability.
- Agility: We are flexible, dynamic, fast and adaptive.
- High ethical standards: We do not compromise on integrity.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: We encourage everyone to consider the business their own.
- Employee development: We prioritize investment in our people to enhance opportunities for lifetime careers, which in turn builds a company that will stand the test of time.
- Loyalty: Our “One Heartbeat” motto means we work together, honor our values, and remain loyal to each other and the company through the ups and downs of life.
- Fun and work-life balance: We go beyond the usual benefits because whether at work or at home, whole-body wellness and life balance are important to our Glidewell Family members.
Question of the Week
Last week we rallied all pets of Glidewell. With so many cute faces, we had to up our feature to randomly selecting four submissions instead of one. Enjoy!
Dear Glidewell Family,
We don’t know about you, but it feels much longer than a few weeks since these changes were placed on us, and we sure are ready to go back to some sort of normal.
As our customers gear up to return to work, we are standing right there beside them with our R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Regulatory Affairs departments developing sanitizing sprays, facemask components, nasal swabs, and other antiviral solutions. Here’s a behind the scenes look into our journey so far! Keep in mind we’re in the early stages of our newer business ventures and will share new developments when we can.
Question of the Week
Last week, our featured question of the week was “Glidewell is in the business of making beautiful smiles, what’s something that makes you smile?” We hope this submission makes you smile as big as we did.
“My mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Hearing my mom’s voice and spending time with her every single day makes me smile.” – LaTonya Miller
